It’s official: Pantone has named “Ultra Violet” as their 2018 Color of the Year.
In case you missed it, every year, Pantone (“the world renowned authority on color”) picks a Color of the Year, setting the tone for artists and designers everywhere. For those of us in the advertising industry, the Color of the Year is kind of a big deal. After all, it’s our job to stay on top of trends for our clients.
So what do de Novo’s designers think about the choice? We asked our Senior Graphic Designer, Becca, and our Art Director, Chris, to weigh in on Ultra Violet:
Becca Skalsky, Senior Graphic Designer
“As an artist and designer, I’m naturally drawn (see what I did there!) to all things visual, but I find color particularly fascinating. Beyond its aesthetic qualities, color has an incredible ability to evoke emotion and help tell a story in the most simple and unabridged way. Pantone’s 2018 Color of the Year, Ultra Violet, is no exception.
My first impressions—it’s regal and striking, without being overly pretentious. A bluer shade of purple, I find this particular hue approachable, yet innovative. It’s also interesting to note the historical significance that this color carries. According to Live Science, purple has long had a connection to royalty. Is it coincidence then that this color was chosen for 2018, given the impending nuptials of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in the spring and all the buzz surrounding their union? No matter what the cultural significance, I think Pantone’s Ultra Violet is nothing short of inspirational and imaginative. Here’s to an “ultra” great year ahead!”
Chris Moore, Art Director
“Ultra Violet, huh? OK, well first, let me show you what I think…

My iPod:
My shoes:
My car:
I adore purple in almost all its forms. It’s energetic and eye-catching. It can be soothing and soft, yet can imbibe royalty and power. It’s such a flexible color, and really isn’t used as often as blues and greens. Another reason I love it—it’s not overused. I’ll use it as often as I can in the coming year. Kudos Pantone.”
