A Strategic Annual Appeal Campaign for the Iowa Women’s Foundation

By reframing systems-level change through clear, data-informed storytelling, Creating Currents of Change generated more than $20,000 in donations while strengthening donor confidence in long-term impact.

The Challenge

The Iowa Women’s Foundation (IWF) uses five pillars—research, education, advocacy, collaboration, and grantmaking—to create systems-level change and promote long-term economic stability for women and girls. Aside from grantmaking, much of this work does not always produce immediate, visible outcomes, making it difficult to communicate urgency and inspire donor action.

For the annual appeal, IWF wanted to engage donors while also reaffirming the role of all five pillars in how they work. The campaign needed to educate, differentiate, and motivate—without overcomplicating or relying on crisis-based messaging.

The Insight

Supporters want to give, but ambiguity can deter them.

We identified that many prospective and emerging donors value data, clarity, and proof of effectiveness. Emotional storytelling is valuable, but on its own, it was insufficient for this audience.

To build credibility and inspire giving, the campaign needed to clearly illustrate how upstream, research-driven work translates into real-world impact. If donors could visualize IWF’s proven process for systems-level change, they would be more confident investing in it.

The Strategy

Drawing on a practical metaphor, we developed Creating Currents of Change, a unifying concept that frames IWF’s work as a river. This metaphor translated complex systems thinking into an intuitive narrative, allowing donors to understand IWF’s five pillars—research, education, collaboration, advocacy, and grantmaking—as part of one connected process.

Too often, women and girls are at risk of “drowning” within society’s various systems. IWF works to address these crucial issues by identifying preventive solutions (upstream) and funding organizations working to meet immediate needs (downstream).

The strategy prioritized clarity first, trust second, and action third.

The Execution

To demonstrate this, we developed a tangible, interactive direct mail piece that visually mapped the five-pillar approach to sustainable change. Using IWF’s nationally recognized work in childcare, we went fold by fold, balancing storytelling with data to engage both emotionally and intellectually.

A dedicated landing page and coordinated digital communications reinforced the same framework, ensuring message consistency across channels and guiding donors from understanding to action.

Each touchpoint served a specific role, creating a cohesive donor journey rather than isolated tactics.

The Impact

The campaign successfully reframed how donors understood IWF’s work—positioning giving as an investment in long-term solutions rather than short-term fixes.

The Creating Currents of Change mailer generated more than $20,000 in donations, supporting IWF’s ability to address additional barriers and expand its systems-level impact for women and girls across Iowa.

Beyond revenue, the campaign strengthened donor confidence and clarity—laying the groundwork for sustained philanthropic engagement.
